What Do We Mean by System

You’ve heard the word before.

System

It shows up everywhere.

  • Business systems
  • Education systems
  • Healthcare systems
  • Belief systems
  • Operating systems

We use the word constantly.

But rarely stop to define it.

Because not everything structured is a system.

A checklist isn’t a system.
A tool isn’t a system.
A policy isn’t a system.

Even a process — on its own — isn’t quite a system.

These are components.

A system exists when components interact in a way that produces consistent outcomes over time.

Two conditions must be present:

  • Interdependence — elements influence one another
  • Persistence — outcomes repeat across time

Without both, there is no system.

Only isolated activity.

And here’s the shift that matters:

A system is not defined by what is designed.
It is defined by what is produced.
If outcomes differ from intent, the system — not the plan — is the source of truth.


The Factory

A factory is often described as a system.

And it is — but not because machines exist.

It becomes a system through interaction:

  • Materials arrive
  • Workflows sequence tasks
  • Machines process inputs
  • People make decisions
  • Constraints shape flow

What matters is not any single step.

It’s how they connect.

When those interactions stabilize, something emerges:

A consistent output.

➡️ Volume
➡️ Quality
➡️ Defects
➡️ Delays

These outcomes are not random.

They are produced.

This is the core insight behind works like “The Goal” — that bottlenecks, flow, and throughput are not isolated problems, but properties of the system itself.

And the factory doesn’t stand alone.

It sits inside larger systems:

⬆️ Upstream (before the factory) — sourcing, supply chains, product decisions

⬇️ Downstream (after the factory) — distribution, marketing, support, disposal

Each layer interacting.

Each layer producing outcomes.

Systems within systems, within systems.


Not All Systems Look Like Systems

Now consider something less obvious.

👉 Social media.

It doesn’t look like a system in the traditional sense.

There are no assembly lines.
No physical outputs.

But the same conditions apply.

  • Interdependence: Algorithms, content, users, incentives, notifications — all influencing each other.
  • Persistence: Certain behaviors repeat.

✅ Scrolling
✅ Posting
✅ Reacting
✅ Returning

And over time, the pattern becomes familiar.

  • You know when something will land.
  • You know when it won’t.

So behavior adjusts.

For some, that shows up in what gets posted.

  • How it’s said.
  • When it’s shared.

For others, it looks quieter.

  • What gets watched.
  • What gets skipped.
  • How long something holds attention.
  • When you leave — and when you come back.

No post required.

Because the system doesn’t just respond to what you say.

It responds to what you do.

→ What you pause on.
→ What you replay.
→ What you scroll past without finishing.

Even when you think you’re not choosing — the system is learning from what you don’t resist.

And over time, something shifts.

Not just behavior.

Preference

What holds attention begins to define what feels interesting.

What doesn’t… disappears faster each time.

You don’t experience this as pressure.

You experience it as instinct. Your Instinct. Something that feels like your own.

But the outcomes are consistent:

  • More time spent.
  • More return behavior.
  • More alignment with what the system surfaces.

And less of what it doesn’t.

Whether you post or not doesn’t change this.

Because participation isn’t defined by contribution. It’s defined by interaction.

And over time, it becomes harder to tell where your preferences end…

…where the system’s preferences begin,

and who exactly is shaping your preferences.

Even if it doesn’t look like a system — if it acts like one, it is one.


What This Changes

Once you see systems this way, a pattern becomes clear:

☝️ If something keeps happening. It is being produced.

Not by chance. Not by isolated decisions.

👍 By a system.

And systems don’t operate at the level of individual components.

They operate across interactions.

Which is why changing a single element rarely changes the outcome — the interactions are what produce it.

To alter the outcome, the interactions must change.

Not what is intended.

Not what is documented.

What is produced.

Once you see it… you start noticing systems everywhere.

Including the ones shaping you.

Some of which you don’t experience as systems at all, like in musical chairs.

Even the ones that feel like you.


The simple meaning to hang with

If it keeps happening, it’s not random — it’s a system.

  • A treat is given.
  • The cat quiets.
