Stand Somewhere. On Purpose.
You can’t unsee it now.
The tradeoffs. The shifts.
The way systems move things — quietly, consistently — across people, across time, across you.
Once you see it, something changes.
Not in the system.
In you.
You Were Never Outside It
It’s easy to think of systems as something external.
Workplaces. Platforms. Policies. Process. Tools. Targets.
Things you participate in. Actions you perform.
Even just being present is participation. There is no non-participation state.
But participation isn’t neutral.
The moment you’re inside a system, it begins shaping how you move within it.
- What you prioritize.
- What you ignore.
- What you tolerate.
- What you optimize for — without realizing it.
Participation (passive or intentional) means you’re already being shaped.
Not eventually.
Not hypothetically.
Now.
Drift Feels Like Default
Most of this doesn’t feel like a decision.
It feels like flow. Like floating. Like being pushed more than choosing.
- You follow the incentives.
- You respond to the pressures.
- You adapt to what’s rewarded.
And over time, that adaptation becomes orientation.
Not because you chose it — but because you stayed in it long enough for it to become “the way”.
Not choosing doesn’t remove the tradeoff.
It assigns it for you.
The Question Isn’t the System
It’s tempting to focus outward.
- To analyze the system.
- To critique it.
- To try to understand how it works.
But that only gets you so far.
Because the system will keep doing what it does.
- Optimizing.
- Shifting.
- Distributing tradeoffs — whether you agree with them or not.
The question isn’t how the system works.
It’s how you choose to engage with it.
Standing Is a Decision
There’s no neutral position.
No frictionless path. No place where tradeoffs disappear.
- Only different distributions of outcomes.
- Different alignments of values.
- Different ways of participating.
So the question becomes:
Where do you stand?
- What are you willing to carry?
- What are you no longer willing to ignore?
- What do you optimize for — on purpose

Standing somewhere — on purpose — restores agency.
Because staying aligned with the system is a choice.
… following the way is a choice.
… adapting around it is a choice.
- You may choose speed over precision.
- You may choose alignment over friction.
- You may choose what others have already accepted.
- You may choose practicality over compliance
The point is, you have a choice. And how you choose to exercise it is also a choice.

But once you see it — you’re no longer just in it.
You’re agreeing to it.
Not because it removes the system.
But because it changes your relationship to it.
Standing Happens at Every Level
Standing somewhere isn’t just personal.
It happens at every layer of the system.

You choose how you participate.
- What you prioritize
- What you ignore
- What you optimize for in your own work
Even inside constraints… you still make choices. How you show up is one of them.

You translate the system.
You don’t just receive incentives and constraints — you interpret them.
- What gets emphasized to the team
- What gets deprioritized to the team
- What gets protected
You can enforce standards… or adapt to friction.
You can inherit misalignment… or amplify it.
Where you choose to stand orients both you and the team.

You define what the system rewards.
- What gets measured
- What gets funded
- What gets celebrated
And just as importantly — what doesn’t.
What you say matters.
But what you reinforce matters more.
Because people don’t follow words.
They follow what gets rewarded, protected, and allowed.
Every metric is a stance.
Every system is a set of tradeoffs — chosen, whether acknowledged or not.
The system isn’t just something you’re inside of.
It’s something you’re helping create — whether you mean to or not.
What This Looks Like
It doesn’t require grand gestures.
Sometimes it’s small.
→ Choosing depth over speed
→ Choosing fewer, more intentional decisions
→ Choosing presence over output
→ Choosing understanding over appearance
Not perfectly.
But deliberately.

- They will continue to shape behavior.
- To distribute tradeoffs.
- To reward certain paths over others.
That doesn’t change.
What changes… is whether you see it.
And once you do — whether you drift with it… or stand somewhere.
On purpose.

Because how you show up doesn’t stay contained.
- It shapes what gets reinforced.
- It signals what’s acceptable.
- It becomes part of the way.
And whether you realize it or not — others orient around it.
