Friction
Friction is any condition that slows, redirects, discourages, or reshapes action inside a system.
Friction changes movement.
It can make an action harder to start, harder to continue, harder to complete, or harder to repeat. It can also create pause, protection, reflection, or resistance when movement should not be automatic.
Friction is not always bad.
Some friction protects attention, improves judgment, creates space, reduces harm, or keeps a system from moving too fast. Other friction creates confusion, waste, avoidance, delay, frustration, or unnecessary effort.
In MNKY Math, friction matters because it changes what people do, what they avoid, what they complete, and what they never begin.
Negative friction
Negative friction makes useful action harder than it needs to be.
It often appears as drag, confusion, delay, interruption, or emotional weight. When negative friction accumulates, people may avoid the action, abandon the process, create workarounds, or stop trusting the system.
Examples of negative friction include:
- too many choices
- unclear next steps
- unnecessary process
- repeated interruptions
- confusing interfaces
- emotional drag
- approval bottlenecks
Positive friction
Positive friction makes harmful, careless, rushed, or misaligned action harder to perform automatically.
It can create a useful pause. It can protect people from moving too quickly. It can help a system preserve attention, safety, consent, judgment, or commitment.
Examples of positive friction include:
- useful pause
- safety checks
- consent
- reflection
- cooling-off periods
- intentional effort
- commitment signals
Emerging friction lenses
Positive and negative friction are useful starting points.
But friction is rarely only one thing.
As MNKY Math develops this concept, friction may be examined through several additional lenses:
- Protective friction — friction that slows action in order to protect attention, safety, consent, judgment, or long-term outcomes.
- Extractive friction — friction that makes a person work harder so another part of the system can save effort, capture value, avoid cost, or preserve control.
- Coordination friction — friction that appears when people, teams, tools, roles, or timing do not line up cleanly.
- Cognitive friction — friction created by confusion, complexity, ambiguity, poor information design, or excessive mental load.
- Emotional friction — friction created by fear, frustration, embarrassment, resentment, distrust, or the felt weight of a system.
- Agency friction — friction that reduces a person’s ability to choose, act, recover, question, redirect, or meaningfully participate.
These lenses are not final categories.
They are ways of noticing what friction is doing, who carries it, and what behavior it produces.

MNKY Math does not ask only whether friction exists.
It asks what the friction is doing.
A friction point may be a barrier, a signal, a safeguard, a cost, a teacher, or a form of hidden design. It may protect the system. It may protect the person. It may protect the organization. It may also shift effort, delay, confusion, or emotional cost onto someone who was not considered in the original design.
The important question is not simply:
How do we remove friction?
The better question is:
What behavior is this friction creating, preventing, or moving somewhere else?
