A casual beginning

MNKY did not begin as a framework. It began in light, joking chatter between peers while we were doing the mundane, automatic tasks of work under the pressures of a busier than average day.

It emerged out of a contradiction many people will recognize.

There was the official way to do the work: trained, documented, quality-focused, and clear on paper.

Then there was the practical way the work often got done when things backed up, time tightened, and experienced people knew which methods kept things moving.

The official way existed for a reason.

The practical way existed for a reason too.

That was the problem.

The person doing the work is left between two forms of correctness: follow the process as trained, or adapt to the pressure the system is actually creating.

That is a low-win system: a system that sends conflicting signals. Not a broken system. Not necessarily a bad system. A system where the signals conflict, the pressures are real, and the people inside the system have to absorb the tradeoff.


I was newer to the work, following the practical guidance of someone more experienced. The method was faster. It seemed precise. It may have even been more precise in practice because the result was being checked more than once.

But it contradicted the training.

So after doing it a few times, I said:

“This is faster, but it oddly feels wrong.”

The explanation was equally practical: you can do it the trained way if you want, but this way is faster, and we know it works.

I understood.

And still, the contradiction sat there.

So I timidly said, with a light flutter in my words:

“I’m just trying to be a good monkey.”

A peer, also newer to the work, softly chimed in, “I get that."


"Good Monkey”

The phrase stayed with me.

Not because anyone else had said it.

Because once spoken it had resonated with another. I wasn’t alone in what I was feeling.

I began thinking about how often systems ask us to do some version of that: follow the signal, chase the reward, avoid the penalty, keep the queue moving, hit the number, accept the prompt, take the offer, trust, act, repeat, or move along.

The monkey was not an insult.

It was a recognition.

A monkey is what a system often asks us to become when it wants performance without reflection, when it wants compliance devoid of hesitation.

But the word carried too much history and too much noise to hold the idea cleanly.

So the word changed.

MNKY.

Not an acronym at first. More like a mark. A literary tattoo.

A stripped-down signal for the moment a person notices the system, notices the pressure, notices the reward, notices the penalty — and chooses to participate with awareness instead of automatic compliance.

That is where MNKY began.

Not as a brand. As a moment of recognition.
